Cigré Canada Conference on Power Systems, October 19-21, 2008
 
Cigré Canada is holding this year’s conference on power systems in Winnipeg, Manitoba. This is the third such annual conference organized by the Canadian National Committee of Cigré.
The theme for this year’s conference is : Technology and Innovation for the Power Grids of the Future. The conference will bring together power engineering professionals, decision makers, economists, academics and others with interest in electric power systems. The conference is meant to showcase Canadian contributions as well as to promote Cigré as a strong technical organization, capable of contributing to the Canadian technical expertise and know-how through its Study Committees and technical documents they produce as well as its conference proceedings.
In addition to active participation by practicing engineers and professionals, we would like to encourage graduate students to attend this conference to share their research activities and contributions. This will give the graduate students an excellent opportunity not only to get feedback on their work from other researchers but also to meet prospective employers during the conference.
Cigré Canada invites you to consider submitting a paper/contribution to this conference. The attached conference brochure provides an overview of the conference and guidelines for submitting papers.

This is the third conference organized by CIGRÉ’s Canadian National Committee.
CONFERENCE OVERVIEW:
The conference will open with a plenary session focusing on technology and innovation in the future North American power grids. Utilities will be invited to discuss their views on how they are integrating new technology and where they would like to see advances being made in the future. Manufacturers will provide a glimpse of new technologies they have available or that are under development.
In addition, the conference will be comprised of paper sessions focusing on the following topics:
  • Improvements in power infrastructure (life extension design of aging infrastructure, innovative advances in materials)
  • Incorporation of information technology in the future power grid, (wide area measurement systems, advances in energy management)
  • Integration of a range of new energy sources, such as renewable energy sources, nuclear energy and fossil fuels into the network
  • The organization of the grid of tomorrow (new markets, new business models)
  • Advances in study and analysis tools such as innovative uses of simulation and decision making tools
  • Workplace issues and human resources development for the utility, consultant and power equipment manufacturing sector
Contributors are sought on all topics related to the following issues: Integration and impacts of new and renewable energy resources, technologies for the integration of new resources, new power system planning, operation and control paradigms, and future skilled worker resourcing challenges.
This major event in power systems will provide an exceptional venue to CIGRÉ members and interested parties for presenting fundamental and technological developments and for promoting key suppliers of products and services for electrical power systems.
The conference will bring together power systems engineers, decision makers, economists, academics and others with interest in the profession. It is meant to showcase Canadian contributions, as well as to promote CIGRÉ as a strong technical organization, capable of contributing to the Canadian technical expertise and know-how through its study committees and the technical documents they produce as well as its conference proceedings.
SUBMISSION OF PAPERS
Prospective authors are invited to submit their full papers for review, according to the schedule below. The papers and technical enquiries should be sent to cigre08@ee.umanitoba.ca. Papers will be accepted only in Adobe Acrobat format (*.pdf).

CIGRÉ (International Council on Large Electric Systems) is a permanent nongovernmental and non profit-making international association based in France with members in over 80 countries. It was founded in 1921 and aims to:
  • Facilitate and develop the exchange of engineering knowledge and information between engineering personnel and technical specialists in all countries as regards generation and high voltage transmission of electricity;
  • Make managers, decision-makers and regulators aware of the synthesis of CIGRÉ’s work in the area of electric power.
Additionally, CIGRÉ contributes to the Canadian technical expertise and know-how through its study committees and the technical documents produced as well as its conference proceedings. The CIGRÉ Canada Conference is meant to showcase Canadian contributions to the electric industry, as well as promote CIGRÉ as a strong technical organization.
